Calliope Tsoupaki was born in Piraeus, Greece, in May 1963.

First she studied piano and music theory at the Hellinicon Conservatory in Athens and later she joined the composition classes of Yannis Ioanithis. After she received her piano diploma, she continued her study in composition with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague, in the Netherlands, where she graduated in December 1992.

Calliope Tsoupaki has already composed an ouvre of over the 70 compositions that cover a scale from solo to orchestra pieces. Her works are peformed all around the world. Her composition "Sappho's tears" won an honorably mention during the 1996 International Rostrum of composers organised by the International Music Council with the support of Unesco.

In 2001 she was composer in residence at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam to giving lectures and workshops on the interpretation of her music. She is giving regularely masterclasses in composition, and is member of the jury of the International Gaudeamus Music Week in 2006.

Calliope Tsoupaki’s recent works include two chamber operas: Dark for chamber ensemble and soprano, based on the personality of Jeanne d’Arc; libretto by Edzard Mik, performed by Rosa ensemble & directed by Paul Koek and ZT/Hollandia theater Company. Vita Nova for three barok instruments and alto, based on the book La Vita Nuova by Dante, directed by Berend Strik and produced by the Korzo theater in the Hague. The opera will be performed at the International Performance Arts Centre Dom Musyki, in Moskow, in May 2006, during the festival Dutch Culture Days.
